What is Online Shopping?
Online Shopping is the process of when customers are able to purchase goods or services over the Internet in a real time situation. It’s as simple and as efficient as walking into a high street store and purchasing the products over the counter. The process of purchasing items online is known as electronic commerce (E-Commerce). The process of e-commerce doesn’t always refer to a customer buying a product from a retailer. It can also refer to an exchange of money between businesses over the Internet or via computer networks.

The online shopping market is worth billions of dollars a years, with more electronic transactions happen than those done in person.

Do I need an e-Commerce Website?
If you have a product to sell or a simple way for a customer or client to pay you money then the answer is most likely yes.
There are many practical ways of adding this functionality to your website. If you have a single product to sell, having a complete online shop may be a bit extreme, instead it would be a better idea to just have a simple order system. Yet on the other hand if you have a wide range of products and services you would best of having a full online shop that shows them all, accompanied with a shopping cart.

Is it REALLY that simple?
The online market is highly competitive, simply adding an online shopping facility to your website does not mean that people will buy. There are numerous points that you will need to think about:
1. Design: The site will need to be designed to get the most of your customers, drawing them to the shopping area and prompting them to make a purchase at every opportunity, without scaring them off.
2. Pricing: You have to be competitive about your pricing, remember it is a lot easier for your customer to go else where when shopping online.
3. Getting Customers: It is not as simple as "Build it and they will come", you will have to work hard at your Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and marketing, both online and offline.
There is also more to thinking about, but these are the main points.

Don't be put off, there is a lot of money to be made online, all it takes is a lot of planning.
